DC weekend

Over teacher's convention weekend we headed south to Baltimore and DC. Although we didn't try to find Charm City Cakes (much to Gillian's annoyance) we did spend some time in the Inner Harbor, where I haven't been since college. We got to see this 348 foot Norwegian tall ship, which was in town for the weekend.

In DC, our primary goal was to see the Museum of American History. The girls specifically wanted to see Kermit, Dorothy's shoes, and Julia's kitchen. (check, check and check.) In past trips, we've only dashed through Natural History, and it was really nice that they are old enough to appreciate the exhibits. Holly has been studying Lincoln, and enjoyed the exhibition of his administration and personal effects. Here's Ward, pretending to wear the top hat Lincoln wore to Ford's Theater.

Brad & Caryn suggested that we tour of the Bureau of Engraving & Printing, which is where they print the paper currency. It's only open on weekdays, although they are staffed 24/7. It was a great idea, and the kids were amazed at seeing all those hundred-dollar bills. We bought the ubiquitous bag of shredded money as a souvenir, which was taken for "show and teach" when they got back to school.

We also had time to spend about an hour in Air and Space, which the girls thought was really cool. On our next trip we'll allot more time, and try to fit in an IMAX movie.

We walked all over downtown, from the Washington Monument to the White House. The kids may have gotten a little tired of being photographed in front of national landmarks.

We spent the rest of the weekend with Brad & Caryn, and the girls got some alone time with Laura & Robby on Saturday night, when the adults went to a collegiate ballroom dance competition at the University of Maryland. Seriously intense. And the fans are rabid; cheering for their favorites with loud hooting and hollering of the number of their pair. I developed almost uncontrollable giggles when a young woman came to stand by us and kept shouting "WHOO! 1-4-8! WHOO!"

Note to self: don't go out for dinner and drinks BEFORE the ballroom dance competition!
