A near-perfect day

Mother Nature gave us a nice present yesterday. Not only was the snow packable (it became even more so when it warmed up enough to change to rain), it started early enough so that at bedtime Tuesday we knew we'd have a delay. 6AM brought the "closed" call.

Since the road plowing around here is really dependent on whether school is open, Ward looked out the window and went back to sleep.

I got up and decided to make cinnamon rolls. Krusteaz makes a nice box mix, which is much better than the cans, but less work than full-scratch. Just enough kneading, rolling and proofing when you are still waking up!

The girls were outside before 9. They made their first "all on their own" snowman. We had some snow "paint" but the only color left was red. So it looked a little gory out there once the snow changed over to rain.

When they came in, Ward proposed a game of Scavenger Hunt, a great board game we got for Christmas. Every fourth round is the clean-up, so everything gets put back (mostly!). That was followed by a successful game of Clue (I was doubtful they'd get the concept. I was wrong.) and then we played team Battleship.

For lunch, I made loaded baked potato soup, which was just the thing for a cold, wet day.

Surprisingly, the snowblower not only started right up, it also turned out to be effective at clearing the wet heavy snow. We didn't get much icing; it pretty much went from snow to rain.

When everyone went outside again around 3, I made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. They decided to knock over the original snowman, and then build six more. Ward contributed the family on the bench. The backyard looked like a battlefield though, between the well-trampled snow and the remnants of the red snow paint. We ended the day by a roaring fire. It really doesn't get better than that.
