Unlike poor Linus, for us this is a daytime trip, but no less a quest. It involves climbing around in a field, past countless seemingly identical choices until someone finds the elusive "great pumpkin." Ward's excellent rule is that you have to be able to carry your own pumpkin. I think we bent this quite a bit this year, especially as I straggled out carrying two, and Ward one. Gillian managed to lift hers for a picture, but that was about it.

Given the warm weather, the vines were still very much alive and in blossom. The pumpkins were all still attached, and much to our surprise, still VERY green. We grown-ups wondered whether they would ripen off the vine. Another mom called that she had trekked all the way back to the main barn to ask that same question, and evidently they will.
Our three girls had a good time frolicking together and climbing on Aunt Dee.

We ended the day at Redwoods. Ward and I have always wondered about it, and it seemed like a good place for 4:00 on a Sunday afternoon with three kids in tow. The food was pretty good, but the service was pretty poor. As people told me this week, that's par for the course. But it was really nice to sit outside and watch the parade of 80's ladies who emerged from a function (Shower? Theme party?) inside. We saw a white sweater dress, with a wide black belt, black lace tights and black Madonna booties. And it only got worse from there. Parallel universe, definitely. I know that the 80's are supposedly back, but this was the stuff that looked bad 20 years ago! Yeesh.
